How To Rebuild Your Credit
The first step in rebuilding your credit with your creditors is to aknowledge that you do have a problem, otherwise you will only slip further and further into credit problems.
Once you have finally come to the conclusion that you are in a difficult situation and are not going to be able to pay back your credit card debt or loan, you need to call your creditors and inform them of the situation. Do not expect them to look down on you or be hard to work with, afterall they want to work with you in order to get the money you owe them! Usually they will work with you to come to an agreement that plans your repayments.
By keeping your creditor informed of your situation you will build up trust with them, which will help your credit report in the long term. As long as you come to an arrangement with them and stick to it you may never need to rebuild your credit as your creditors will report your good faith to the credit bureaus.
Contact your creditors. Inform them of your situation. Come to a mutual repayment plan. Stick to it.
However, some people will bury their head and let their credit card debt or loan get out of control. If this happens and you have not told your creditors or have been refused credit / finance then you need to start working on rebuilding your credit. Here are some tips to help you on your way:
- You are entitled to a free copy of your credit report within 60 days of being refused credit.
- Use the credit report to find your weaknesses.
- Check for spelling mistakes or errors in your address.
Now you need to put in place a realistic budget that details what incoming and outgoing funds you have per month. Then allocate as much as possible to repay your debts. Consolidate your credit card debts and loans to make them easier to manage and repay. Make sure you do not miss a monthly repayment. Once you have transferred all your credit card debts on to one single card, close your other credit cards so that you cannot use them. Stick to your budget and pay off as much of the overall credit card debt as possible every month.
You could also apply for a prepaid credit card that does not allow you to overspend.
Consolidate your credit card debts. Negotiate with your creditors. Calculate a realistic monthly budget. Pay back as much as possible.
Taking these steps will get you back on track and begin to rebuild your credit.
